Fight for good jobs. Vote NO on Prop 22

One of the biggest elections of our lifetime is just days away. In California, not only is our fight to get pro-worker candidates into office, but we also must fight against wealthy and powerful corporations attempting to destroy good, middle-class union jobs. That’s why it’s so important to vote NO on Proposition 22.

Prop 22, also known as the App-Based Drivers as Contractors and Labor Policies Initiative, allows multi-billion dollar app-based companies like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Instacart to deny their workers basic protections like paid sick leave, workers compensation, or unemployment compensation.

Current law requires companies like Uber to provide their drivers with rights and protections just like any other California business. If Prop 22 passes, it would create a race to the bottom that would ultimately deteriorate labor standards for workers outside the app-based business. Not only does this proposition hurt workers who are misclassified as “contractors” instead of being treated like employees – it will erode wages, working conditions, and worker power for all workers across the board. It would also exempt these companies from contributing to programs we all need like Social Security and Medicare.

Prop 22 was written by app-based companies and they have spent more than $200 million advocating for Prop 22 to maximize their profits at the expense of workers. We need you to fight back and vote NO on Prop 22. We need you to tell your family, friends, and fellow union members to vote No on Prop 22 so that we can send a message to corporate CEOs that we will not allow them to buy their way out of following California labor law.

There are also numerous other important propositions and races on the ballot this year. It’s crucial that we all make our voices heard. Please visit CWA.org/candidates-ca to see all of CWA’s recommendations for elections in California this year.

In solidarity,

Frank Arce
CWA District 9 Vice President
